For brands selling into markets where WhatsApp is the default messaging app — India, the UK, much of Europe and Latin America — it’s become one of the highest-converting channels available. Open rates on WhatsApp routinely clear 90%+, far above email’s typical 15-25%. But most businesses either ignore it entirely or bolt on a generic chatbot that annoys more than it converts. Here’s how we actually set it up.

Pick the right infrastructure first

For anything beyond a handful of manual chats, you need the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), accessed through a Meta Business Solution Provider like Interakt, WATI, Gupshup or Twilio. This is what unlocks template messages, automation and CRM integration — the consumer WhatsApp Business app alone doesn’t scale past a few dozen conversations a day.

Where automation earns its keep

  • Utility messages — order confirmations, shipping updates, appointment reminders. These are expected, welcomed, and have the Platform’s highest delivery reliability.
  • Abandoned-cart and lead follow-up — a WhatsApp nudge 30-60 minutes after a form fill or cart abandonment consistently outperforms the equivalent email.
  • Post-purchase check-ins — a simple “how’s it going” message 3-5 days after delivery both catches problems early and opens a natural upsell moment.

Where to hold back

Meta categorizes outbound messages as Utility, Authentication or Marketing, and Marketing templates require explicit opt-in and get throttled hardest if engagement drops. Cold promotional blasts to a purchased or scraped number list will get your business number flagged or banned — every automated flow should start from an opt-in the customer actively gave: a form submission, a purchase, or an inbound support chat.

Keep a human in the loop

The flows that convert best aren’t rigid decision trees — they’re two or three automated steps that hand off to a real person the moment the conversation gets specific. Customers on WhatsApp expect to reach someone; an automation that never lets them is worse than no automation at all.

Done well, a properly built WhatsApp flow can outperform email as a retention channel within a single quarter. We build these end-to-end — Cloud API setup, flow design and CRM integration — as part of our marketing automation service.
